SABC PROUD TO BE RECOGNISED IN TWO CATAGORIES BY BRAND AFRICA

Johannesburg – Tuesday, 11 June 2024 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is proud to be recognised in the 14th annual Brand Africa 100 | Africa’s Best Brands research and rankings by Brand Africa.

According to Brand Africa’s press release “The research brought together “30 diverse eminent South Africans who’ve built and/or led some of the most iconic brands in pre- and post-democratic SA to debate and determine the 30 most admired brands, events, ideas and people who have
shaped South Africa over the past 30 years”.

The SABC is positioned 2nd and 3rd place respectively, in the ‘Best 5 South African campaigns over 30 years (A-Z)’ through its top public service commercial radio station METRO FM’s iconic brand campaign ‘What makes you black’ and its mother brand campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign ‘Feel it, it is here’, which united the country in supporting Bafana Bafana.

The Corporation is also placed 3rd in the ‘Top Media Brand in SA’ category.

Ms. Mmoni Seapolelo, the Acting Group Executive for Corporate Affairs and Marketing, said, “We are pleased by the recognition, as this survey was about gauging which South African brands have been admired over the last 30 years. The recognition is these particular categories is a testament of the trust that South Africans have in brand SABC”.

Ms. Seapolelo further stated, “To be honored in the year where we are celebrating 30 years of democracy as a country, is not only humbling but a message to the public broadcaster to continue to be the voice of the nation, as we educate, inform and entertain through our various programming”.

METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS 2024 WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Music legend Oscar Oskido Mdlongwa receives Lifetime Achievement honor!

Mbombela, Saturday, 27 April 2024 – METRO FM celebrated Freedom Day by delivering one of the biggest and most unforgettable nights in the music industry, the METRO FM Music Awards 2024. Held at the Mbombela Stadium from 20:00 to 23:00, the event, was hosted by Tebogo ProVerb Thekisho and Luthando LootLove Shosha, and broadcast live on SABC 1 and SABC+.

This year’s MMAs were filled with groundbreaking performances, that left the audience in awe, starting with the memorable track, Horns in the Sun by DJ Kent featuring Mo T, Morda and Brenden Praise. The evening featured standout performances from internationally acclaimed singer and Songwriter, Goapele, Vusi Nova, and Boom Shaka.

It was an exciting and emotional night, filled with high energy and poignant moments that moved the audience to reflect on the exceptional music produced over the past 30 years of democracy. This event was a fitting tribute to the talent and creativity that has defined South African music over the years.

Pioneering musical legend, Oscar Bonginkosi Mdlongwa, who has contributed to the SA music industry for over 26 years was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The METRO FM Music Awards 2024 were brought to you by the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, in association with the Motsepe Foundation. The winners of each category received R50 000, and the Song of the year winner walked away with R150 000, courtesy of Motsepe Foundation. In addition, SANTAM sponsored the Best New Artist category.

The 2024 edition of the METRO FM Awards celebrated the best in South African music, honoring talent, and excellence in the industry.

MEDIA STATEMENT: METRO FM 2024/2025 LINE UP

Johannesburg – Friday, 15 March 2024 – South Africa’s largest commercial radio station, METRO FM, announces an exciting lineup effective April 01. The new lineup will see some of the listeners’ favourites returning as well as talented new additions to the station.

The 2024/25 lineup is an amplification of the station’s winning formula, which saw it gain success last year, by increasing its listenership and revenue. Kina Nhlengethwa, METRO FM Business Manager says “We have amplified the current line-up and are supporting the growth of weekend shows with exciting changes. Our 2024 offering will ensure that the station remains relatable and inspirational to listeners who are constantly seeking inspiration for growth and progression. METRO FM is committed to consistently providing quality content to our listeners as well as adding value to our clients.”

Returning to the station and kicking off the weekday mornings from 05:00 to 06:00 with purpose and inspiration is Rorisang Thandekiso with a show called ‘Command your day’. Luthando “Loot Love” Shosha’s delightful energy will add more thrill to the afternoon drive show ‘The Touch Down’. She joins Thabo “Tbo Touch” Molefe to co-host the show on weekdays between 15:00 and 18:00. Fresh changes will be added to enhance the consistently growing METRO FM weekend slots. Dynamic radio personality, Roxanne Roberson, will join Ryan the DJ on ‘Urban Beat’, on Fridays 22:00 – 00:00 and Saturdays from 21:00 – 00:00.Another fresh voice added to the station is Zola Myeza, who joins Somizi Mhlongo on the 6:00 to 9:00 slot for the ‘The Weekend Breakfast Sounds Good’.

In addition to the lineup changes, the station is launching a new show that focuses on music and urban lifestyle. It will be presented by Quinton “The Naked DJ” Masina and new addition to the station, Thato Immaculate on Saturdays from 18:00 – 21:00. Seasoned broadcaster Paul Mtirara joins The Sunday Love Movement to present ‘The Chill Factor’ between 12:00 – 15:00. ‘Sunday Soul Therapy’ with Msizi Shembe moves to the 21:00 – 00:00 slot, and will focus on urban jazz, classic, soul and R&B music. The latest lineup is the perfect way for the station to leverage its talent, content and reach its diverse community of listeners and stakeholders.

The station would like to thank Nothemba Madumo, Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa, Siya Mhlongo and Sphe “SPHEctacula” Ngwenya for their contribution over the years to METRO FM and serving its audiences with passion and diligence.

MEDIA STATEMENT: THE RETURNING STAR-STUDDED METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

Mbombela, Mpumalanga – Saturday, 06 May 2023 – The METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS 2023 painted the town of Mbombela, in Mpumalanga, black on Saturday night (06 May 2023), with the return of the country’s biggest awards ceremony – themed ‘Black is Back’ – that honours the country’s top musical talent.

After a five-year break, the METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS 2023 (#MMA23) returned with a star-studded gala evening at the Mbombela Stadium, with the prestigious awards ceremony attracting thousands of fans on the night.

The awards were also broadcast live on SABC 1, SABC Plus and METRO FM’s YouTube channel, treating audiences to some of today’s biggest South African music acts on stage, as well as the giving them the opportunity to see their favourite A-list celebrities walk the “Black Carpet”.

On hand to crown South Africa’s Kings and Queens of music across various categories were a number of celebrity presenters, including Lerato ‘LKG’ Kganyago and Katlego Maboe, who hosted the esteemed awards.

They were joined by Somizi (somGAGA) Mhlongo and Mpumi Mlambo, who reported from behind the “Black Curtain” and Sipho (Alphi) Mkhwanazi and Zanele Potelwa who gave audiences a blow-by-blow account of the action and the glitz and glam of the “Black Carpet”.

This team of energetic and charismatic talent was carefully selected to deliver the most impactful awards ceremony that South African audiences have seen in the last five years.

Ms Nada Wotshela, SABC Group Executive: Radio stated, “We are truly delighted with the success of the METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS 2023, which has cemented its place as the biggest and most prestigious music award ceremony on the South African entertainment calendar”.

“South Africa’s music artists have overcome so much in the past five years and there was no better time to relaunch the METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS than now. She said that this year’s awards were held in partnership with the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, which joined forces with METRO FM for the hosting of the 17th edition of the high-profile ceremony.

“We are really excited to have partnered with the province for this year’s METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS. We are confident that this highly regarded event has benefited the music industry and promoted tourism in the province at the same time,” Wotshela concluded.

Johannesburg – Wednesday, 26 April 2023 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is thrilled to reveal more hosts of the star-studded and esteemed METRO FM Music Awards 2023 (MMA23), which will take place on Saturday, 06 May 2023 at Mbombela Stadium, Mpumalanga.

Further to announcing Lerato Kganyago and Katlego Maboe as the presenters of these prestigious awards, the radio and television personalities will be joined by Somizi (somGAGA) Mhlongo, Mpumi Mlambo, Sipho (Alphi) Mkhwanazi and Zanele Potelwa. This team of energetic and charismatic talent was carefully selected to deliver the most impactful awards ceremony South African audiences have seen in five years!

SomGAGA and Mpumi will be holding it down behind the ‘Black Curtain’, while Alphi and Zanele give us the blow-by-blow action and the glitz and glam of the ‘Black Carpet’.

Johannesburg – Thursday, 06 April 2023 – The nominations are in, and tickets go on sale today, 06 April 2023 for the prestigious METRO FM Music Awards 2023 (MMA’s)!

The MMA’s will be hosted at Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela Mpumalanga, on Saturday 06 May 2023 and broadcast live on SABC 1 with additional content available on SABC+ (available to download from Apple and Android App Stores).

ANNOUNCEMENT OF NOMINEES FOR METRO FM MUSIC AWARDS 2023

Johannesburg – Thursday, 30 March 2023 –The SABC is pleased to reveal the much-anticipated list of nominees in various categories of the METRO FM Music Awards 2023 (MMA).

The prestigious awards will be taking place on 06 May 2023, at Mbombela Stadium, in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, and will be broadcast live on SABC 1.

Following the launch of the METRO FM Music Awards 2023 on 18 January 2023 in Mpumalanga, METRO FM management invited all record labels and independent artists to submit music eligible for entry. The submissions for this edition of the awards opened on 19 January 2023 and closed on 28 February 2023. During this period, the SABC received over 900 entries.

METRO FM Business Manager, Ms Kina Nhlengethwa stated, “We are excited to have reached the second stage of the road to the MMA’s. The announcement of MMA nominees always sets the music industry abuzz and this year is no different. We congratulate all the nominees, as this signifies that that their hard work and impact in the industry does not go unnoticed”.

Nhlengethwa further stated, “The station went an extra mile to ensure that there are measures in place to screen properly all entries received, for compliance with the relevant rules of the awards. The rules, regulations and submission checklist were all published on METRO FM platforms. As the awards are based on the public voting for their favorite artist/s in the respective categories, we urge the nominees to go out hard and campaign to their fans!”

MEDIA STATEMENT | METRO FM NEW LINE UP 2023/24

Johannesburg – Friday, 17 March 2023 – The country’s largest commercial radio station, METRO FM, will on Monday 03 April 2023, shake the South African airwaves as it unveils its new line up for 2023/24.

Siya Mhlongo, tasked with ensuring the audience gets the most out of the mornings and start their day right, is the host of the new show ‘Command Your Day’ that will broadcast on Mondays to Fridays from 05:00 – 06:00.

Sabelo Mtshali known as DJ Sabby, the new host of ‘METRO FM Breakfast’, will be joined by one of South Africa’s dynamic and influential stars, Kandice ‘Kandice Kardash’ Coulsen. The show, broadcast weekdays from 06:00 – 09:00, promises to be high energy, fast paced and engaging.

Khutso Theledi takes over ‘The Bridge’ from Mondays to Fridays between 09:00 – 12:00 and will be joined by Quinton Masina the “Naked DJ” and Somizi Mhlongo, who is making a comeback to the station and will contribute on the highly popular segment ‘Ask a Man’.

The station is pleased to announce Faith Mangope as the new host of ‘METRO FM Talk’, from Monday to Thursday 19:00 – 21:00. Faith is a highly experienced broadcaster, entrepreneur, and business woman.

The station is also excited to launch its new digital offering ‘METRO FM OFF-AIR, to be presented by Ayabonga Cawe and will flight once a week. More details will be unveiled soon.

The station is excited about the return of Paul Mtirara, with the programme ‘Let’s Talk about it’ that will broadcast from Monday to Thursday from 21:00 – 00:00 as he brings you the best of music and talk.  This show will bring life to this night time channel, with a combination of light talk fused with music to keep you company as you burn the midnight oil.

METRO FM welcomes DJ Le Soul as she joins Ryan the DJ on ‘The Urban Beat’, Fridays and Saturdays from 22:00 – 00:00.

The young upcoming talented Pretty Ngwenya, fresh from Vow Radio, will be taking over the early weekend breakfast show ‘The Lift’ on Saturdays and Sundays 03:00 – 06:00. The ‘Weekend Breakfast Sounds Good’ with hosts Mat Elle and Somizi Mhlongo, every Saturday between 06:00 – 09:00 promises to deliver the freshest in entertainment, lifestyle, sports, food and community focused projects.

The biggest music chat show in the country ‘METRO FM TOP 30’ will be in the best hands of Khanya Siyengo “Kyeezi” every Saturday from 09:00 – 12:00. Mpumi Mlambo, will follow him between 12:00 – 15:00, taking you on a musical journey, with the show ‘The Encore’.

Lulo Café, one of the best in the in entertainment space, is taking over the ‘METRO FM Lounge’ every Sunday between 18:00 – 21:00.

The rest of the line-up remains the same.
